Who we are and what we do

Around 2,300 students are currently enrolled at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Precision Engineering, Information Technology. There are 60 professors in the faculty as well as 86 adjunct instructors who all provide students with comprehensive insight into practical applications. Our campus offers various state-of-the-art facilities such as laboratories and computer rooms for research and lab activities.

Students have the opportunity to take an active role in the projects we perform as part of our cooperation with the Imaging Science Institute (ISI) in Erlangen. Our in-house institutes, POF-AC (Polymer Optical Fiber Application Center) and ELSYS (Institute for Power Electronic Systems) allow students to be involved in current research projects. We work closely with the communications industry and also offer modern teaching methods including team coaching and promote active participation.

What Electrical Engineers, Mechatronics/Precision Engineers and Media Engineers do

Electrical and information technology engineers let energy flow for private (households) and public use (e.g. transportation, the health sector and businesses). Using state-of-the-art technology, electrical and information technology engineers design and maintain efficient solutions for the technologies of our future. This is a task for innovative and competent individuals who can develop and implement new ideas.

Automobiles, home electronics, and industrial facilities have one thing in common: all of them include mechatronic modules. These devices combine mechanical structures with sensors, electric drives, optical components, electronics and software in very small design spaces. Mechatronic engineers are characterized by a balance of modeling/analysis abilities and experimentation/hardware implementation skills. In their work, mechatronic engineers support technical progress in numerous areas. Again, innovation and application-orientation are key characteristics of individuals entering this field.

Expertise for electronic communication: The expertise of media engineers combines all aspects of our media world. Based on state-of-the-art communication technology and classic media design, these engineers work on new interdisciplinary concepts for the Internet, for advertising, computer games, interactive systems, radio and television. There is considerable demand for innovative and highly qualified people whose foresight and knowledge of the industry shape our media landscape.

Degrees we offer

The practical focus of the degree programs of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Precision Engineering, Information Technology offers is particularly designed to meet these highly varied as well as technical requirements. After completing the various program requirements, students can be awarded the following degrees:

Bachelor (B.Eng.) in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology

The scheduled time for degree completion for the bachelor's degree is seven semesters. Completion of lower-level coursework is followed by a specialization focusing on one of the following fields: automation engineering, electrical energy engineering, electronic systems, information engineering or communication technology.

Bachelor (B.Eng.) in Mechatronics/Precision Technology

The degree program has a scheduled degree completion time of seven semesters. Completion of lower-level coursework is followed by a specialization focusing on one of the following fields: product development, production and automation, or marketing and sales.

Bachelor (B.Eng.) in Media Engineering

During the scheduled seven semester degree completion period, our aim is to provide students with a practical education in engineering and programming as well as in design and media. Our focus is on the methods used for logical and algorithmic thinking as well as modeling ability and interpersonal skills.We are one of the very first German universities that offers a degree program in this field.

Bachelor (B.Eng.) in Medical Engineering

The standard duration of the medical engineering degree program at Nuremberg Tech is seven semesters. After completion of the first two semesters, students specialize in one of two areas of specialization: Electrical Engineering or Information Technology Mechatronics/Precision Engineering.


After finishing their bachelor's degree, students may choose to enroll in one of our master's degree programs to obtain an even higher level of expertise. The Faculty has the following graduate programs:

Master (M.Eng.) in

  • Software Engineering and Information Technology

    The Faculty cooperates with the Ohm Professional School to offer this part-time master's degree program for professionals. The coursework is structured in a combination of distance learning phases and on-site phases, instead of the traditional evening classes.  The program usually takes two years to complete.  For more detailed information in German, please click here.

Career outlook

From cell phones to power plants: products and insights made possible by electrical engineering and information technology can be found in all areas of our lives. The importance and variety of occupations for electrical engineers and information technology engineers will continue to grow, resulting in numerous and interesting tasks for highly qualified specialists. The job outlook in these fields is very promising. In fact, the electrical engineering and information technology industry is already experiencing a lack of specialists, which means that, in the long term, the industry will offer electrical engineering and information technology experts a secure and diverse career.

Size matters. Manufacturing companies, other industries and private households are all increasingly using complex technical equipment that combines mechanical, electronic and optical functions in very small design spaces. The development and manufacture of these products represents an important competitive edge. The ever increasing presence of technology in our professional and private lives means new and interesting challenges in mechatronics and precision engineering.The demand for specialists is high, and the job outlook is excellent.

Technology that is easy to understand and efficient is the basis for all communication. Digital innovation and the increasing interconnection of our world both require effective solutions that make data and information easy to access for everyone. A degree in media engineering will open many doors for an interesting career in the field. The media industry is already experiencing a lack of specialists, which means that, over the long term, the industry will offer technology and media experts a secure and diverse career.
